Stretching from Fed Square through Southbank and beyond, the Melbourne Arts Precinct boasts one of the world’s densest clusters of arts, cultural and creative organisations. Annually, it hosts around 3000 performances and exhibitions, solidifying its position as a dynamic hub for artistic expression.
The Melbourne Arts Precinct transformation project will deliver:
Further improvements to the precinct will include improved all abilities access, new food and beverage spaces, a new loading dock and better rehearsal facilities to support the performing arts centre.
In the construction of the Melbourne Arts Precinct, our team played a critical role by addressing complex structural challenges and ensuring the integrity of the project. We reviewed PT strutting beams to effectively handle vertical loads from columns while resisting significant axial compression due to lateral soil pressure. Implementation of steel diagonal bracing provided essential lateral stability, safeguarding the structure against lateral forces.
Our review involved meticulously engineered deep basements featuring hydrostatic slabs – 900mm and 750mm thick – to counteract uplift from swell and heave, utilising a network of tension piles anchored into siltstone for support.
The structural system of the NGV building includes steel-concrete composite structures, numerous large transfer systems rely on a composite form of construction composed of concrete encased fabricated steel sections to manage significant actions, the innovative Grand Arch transfer system, seismically isolated central omphalos.
