Etihad (Marvel) Stadium

Project
Marvel Stadium has welcomed more than 42 million fans through the gates since opening in 2000. To date, the biggest concert was in 2017, when Adele performed live to over 77,000 people.

Previously known as Etihad Stadium, it was originally built at an estimated $460 million and was one of the main developments for the regeneration of the Docklands precinct.

A truly massive stadium, it provides a natural turf playing surface with a total area of 19,000 square metres. This makes it the perfect backdrop for electrifying AFL games, international soccer matches and nail-biting cricket tests.

It is also famous for its retractable roof: two panels that cover the 160x100m opening, each weighing approximately 1,200 tones. Despite their size, these panels can open or close in the span of eight minutes, ensuring every match can proceed smoothly—rain, hail or shine.

According to the structural design team at Aurecon, these panels make up one of the largest moving roofs in the world; and, when closed, they can also form an enclosed volume of more than a million cubic metres. This also makes them one of the largest applications of natural ventilation in the world.

In addition to this, the stadium’s seats are retractable. This makes it possible to change the seating arrangements, bringing fans into the thick of tense rugby and soccer matches. To provide the best viewing experience, the Level 1 seating bays on all sides of the arena can also be moved closer to the field of play.
