The Council House (CH2) Green Building is a pioneering development located in Melbourne’s CBD, renowned for its innovative sustainable design and environmental performance. Completed in 2006, CH2 was the first building in Australia to achieve a 6-star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, setting a new benchmark for environmentally responsible construction.
The 10-storey office building incorporates a range of cutting-edge sustainability features, including passive cooling systems, rooftop wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, and a unique façade designed for optimal natural ventilation and daylighting.
Water conservation is a key element, with greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting systems integrated into the building’s infrastructure. CH2’s design significantly reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, creating a healthier indoor environment for occupants while minimising its environmental impact.
As a result, CH2 is regarded as a model of sustainable urban development, reflecting Melbourne’s commitment to green building practices and innovation.

In the construction of the Council House CH2 Green Building, our team was instrumental in navigating the challenges posed by its innovative design features, such as the undulating floors and dynamic moving façade. This groundbreaking façade, engineered to open every half hour for fresh air, pushed the boundaries of traditional structural norms and required us to establish new compliance standards, as no precedent existed at the time.
Our expertise ensured that the building met rigorous demands of a six-star energy rating, marking it as Australia’s first structure to achieve this milestone. Additionally, we reviewed the curved ceiling, further contributing to both aesthetic appeal and functional performance of this pioneering green building.
