The Australian Government has officially paused any new residential changes to the National Construction Code (NCC) until mid-2029. This pause, announced in a joint media release by Ministers Clare O’Neil and Murray Watt, is intended to provide greater regulatory certainty for the construction and housing sectors.
While NCC 2025 will still introduce important updates—such as energy efficiency, electrification readiness, waterproofing improvements, and fire safety measures—the pause specifically applies to any additional residential changes beyond NCC 2025. These future changes are now deferred until mid-2029, aligning with the end of the National Housing Accord period.
This means:
- No new residential amendments will be added to the NCC after NCC 2025 until 2029.
- Essential safety and quality updates are not paused—they will continue to be implemented as needed.
- The pause does not affect commercial or public building regulations.
